FORMENTERA BEACH

FORMENTERA is the smallest and the southernmost island of the Balearic Islands.  If you dream of walking along beautiful white, sandy beaches, than you’re welcome in Formentera. The isle is mostly flat as a pancake, the highest point is La Mola, 192 metres.

Enjoy this island, as it is only 19 kilometres long !

Formentera offers you lots of pretty spots and villages with welcoming bars and small shops, so you are always invited to go for a stroll.  The Meccas in the summer are San Francisco and Es Pujols; San Francisco in the mornings for a typical breakfast and lots of hippie-stalls; Es Pujols in the evenings, music bars and discos are very inviting.

La Mola

To this plateau (192 Meter) of La Mola, there is only one road, the only highway in Formentera, with direct access from the port of La Savina.  The village center is El Pilar.  The name of the island derives from ‘forment’, or white bread flour, and the flour mills continue to form part of the landscape. The El Pilar mill has been fully restored and is open to visitors.  But on Wednesday or Sunday, go to the afternoon market, a colourful bazaar with live music and a very wide range of objects for sale.  Don’t be surprised if the lizard is always present in nearly all the stalls.

The Faro de La Mola is a must as well. The lighthouse is at the Formentarian end of the world.  Going round this building reveals the vertical abruptness of the cliffs. Have a look at the monument paying tribute to Jules Verne and his novel about Formentera and La Mola.  The beach near la Mola is Playa Migjorn, the longest sandy beach on the whole island.

Playa Migjorn

Playa Migjorn is the longest sandy beach on the whole island.  Some stretches are partly scattered with rocks. The fine white sand is a paradise for small children, but please take heed of the coast guard warnings before going for a dip: green flag is ok, yellow warns you about dangerous undercurrents.  A quality restaurant for families such as La Fragata, or a beach bar such as Pirata-Bus, are situated here at the coast-line.

Es Calo

This is a little fishing village below La Mola.  Here you will find a small harbour where the fishing boats are hauled up rustic ramps.  Es Caló has a tranquil and homey atmosphere because of these boats, the nets, the rustic sheds protecting the boats, the fish laid out to dry in the sun… Restaurants such as Pasquale and Fonda Rafalet are situated here.  Early in the morning Fonda Rafalet is a meeting point with a fabulous view of the sea.
An ideal place for quenching your thirst, because of the incredible proximity and colours of the sea.  These outdoor cafés for refreshments are a must, they have a unique and enviable flavour, the Es Caló flavour.

SAN FERNANDO

This is located in the middle of the island.  In the summer it is always a meeting place for many people.  Hippies looking for a simple life gathered in this small village and started the Fonda Pepe.  Worth seeing still today and feeling the old days!  It’s a place of nostalgic pilgrimage, going back to the old circuit: Frisco-Formentera -Katmandu.
In Sant Ferran there is also a famous guitar repair workshop.  For many years now the workshop has organised holiday stays for students of the guitar from all over the world.  Make your way from the village centre to the main street, and the outdoor cafés of Bar Vedera and Hotel Iles Pitiuses offer you refreshments and the best tapas.

VVery close to Sant Ferran is the Jeroni’s Cave (Cova d’en Jeroni).  It is said to have been formed three million years ago.  The interior of this cave affords continual surprises for the visitor and the air temperature inside is a constant 22° C, which is ‘cool.

Es Pujols

This is the biggest tourist resort in the summer.  In this village you’ll find lots of restaurants at the sea front, bars and shops.  Nice promenade and a lively beach side town.  Here you can find: sun, beach and night life.

Es Pujols lives by and for its tourists.  At night, local craftsmen sell their wares, and market stalls with clothes and jewellery encourage visitors to buy.

Go up to Es Pujols for fun and entertainment.  Between one end, known as Pedrera d’en Coix, and Punta Prima, whose defence tower marks the furthest limit of the bathing area, you can really find all you need as a tourist. Discos:……, Bars…….., Hotels…………

La Savina

It´s the first place you see when you arrive at Formentera.  La Savina has a nautical atmosphere, an exclusive marina, lots of restaurants, bars and hotels, e.g Hotel Bahia, Hotel Bellavista with a very good restaurant, Hotel La Savina  and lots of scooter and bike rentals, e.g Motor Rent Es Pujols, Autos Formentera, Beta Car …There are also boats for hire.  Have a relaxed look around this small harbour.

From the other side of the harbour you can go on foot or with a bicycle directly to the Big Sur beach , Illetas, Tanga.  In the evenings there are many hippie-stalls

San Francisco

The island’s official ‘capital’, with town hall, tourist information, post office, bank, doctor and fortified church.

Opposite the town hall the church square is the meeting point, in the morning local craftsmen sell their goods here.

Just walk down the pedestrian streets or have a drink in one of the nearby bars

Pay a visit to the Ethnography Museum after your English or Spanish breakfast, that’s a must if you want to see collections of traditional tools from the recent past.

In Formentera, you’re safe, because a brand new hospital is close to San Francisco.
